Vista sp1 beware!
Posted by Paul Carey in Operating Systems on February 13th, 2008
After downloading the latest manufacture release of vista sp1, thinking at long last a cure to all my problems, low and behold my machine becomes a brick!
I walked out on Tuesday night, leaving sp1 to do its thing came back a few hours later and my laptop was bricked, tried the vista CD repair option the menu said about, nada nothing, so back to Ubuntu to do a backup of my stuff and 16 hours later I’ve got a fresh install of vista with sp1 at least installed.
All this because I couldn’t get a scanner to work and wanted a USB hotfix that after a request, Microsoft wouldn’t give me (without spending hours on the phone with there tack support) but was in sp1! why oh why!
It seams there was something on my already buggy vista install that sp1 just didn’t like at all. After doing a clean install, only would sp1 install without problem. The moral of the story beware of sp1 installs, ensure you do a full backup of your important stuff first before risking it and that you are comfortable with doing fresh installs if all goes wrong. The full general download release may be better but I wouldn’t count on it being by much!
